Summary

CREEK TECHNOLOGIES is seeking a full-time, on-site Writing Coach in support of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS), located in Monterey, California. The successful candidate will possess the requisite knowledge of master’s level research and writing to help students meet the academic standards expected.

Responsibilities

• Teach the academic conventions of writing, revising, organizing, and proofreading papers for different purposes at the graduate level: white papers, policy papers, research papers, and thesis proposals and chapters. • Prepare workshops and presentations for asynchronous and live delivery related to academic reading and notetaking, organization and revision, reverse outlining, prewriting strategies, and active voice writing and other activities in response to student needs. • Teach revision, grammar, punctuation, citation styles, and proper attribution practices, according to the Chicago Manual of Style, Humanities (Notes and Biblio), latest edition. • Collaborate with relevant staff and faculty to track student needs and progress. • Counsel students individually on the organization, construction, clarity, and presentation of graduate-level research products, principally master’s theses. • Create instructional content (lectures, presentations, workshops, guidance documents) related to graduate-level academic reading, researching, writing and revision. • Develop data-management systems for tracking projects, including writing SOPs. • Use originality-check software, such as iThenticate, to teach students citation standards and expectations, and interpret software report results. • Develop familiarity with evolving technologies of writing and research, such as generative AI tools including Elicit, Consensus, Claude, and proprietary and internal CHDS tools for ChatGPT. • Copy edit materials for publication on an as-needed basis for CHDS materials and publications.

Qualifications

• Evidence of strong teamwork and collaboration skills. • Proficiency in using originality-check software, such as Turnitin or iThenticate. • Knowledge of the English language and graduate-level academic writing fundamentals, including organization, structure, grammar, writing conventions and styles, punctuation, syntax, word choice, parallelism, paraphrasing, signal phrasing, quoting, and citing. • Knowledge of formatting documents to academic publication standards, specifically Blue Book and Chicago Manual of Style (Humanities). • Experience with adult learners and associated andragogical principles. • Familiarity with high academic standards, such as the importance of academic honor codes. • Exceptional computer skills for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and file sharing. • High proficiency in line editing.

Education

• Master's degree in English, journalism, communication, rhetoric, international or public policy, or a writing-intensive field from an accredited university.

Experience

• Experience in creating presentations, educational materials, and academic content. • Experience with graduate-level, adult learners. • Evidence of high-level knowledge, skills, competencies, and modalities of graduate-level research and writing. • Preferred: Experience in teaching writing, composition, or research.

Salary Range

$75,000 - $80,000 Commensurate with education and experience.
